The Point 1 Project

David’s story is inspiring, going from 65th in the world to challenging in world championship final. Through this journey of dedication, determination and desire comes with the inevitable skills of cultivating a winning mindset, clarifying the goal, building a plan, working with a team and of course dealing with both the ups and downs.

Like many sports people, David hit a crossroads early in his career and decided to make a promise to himself. He wanted to get to the age of 30 and be able to say to himself, he gave athletics a go.

He left Dublin in 2006 at the age of 23 and relocate to Loughborough University, the high performance centre of UK athletics. Instantly, the high performance eco systems paid dividends. In his first year David went on to retain his European Indoor title in the 5th ever fastest time (45.52) by a European.

Confidence is a powerful tool, and David went on to compete with distinct at Olympic, World and European level.

Throughout his journey David developed valuable skills which added immense value to his personal performance but also to the performance of his increasingly important support team. Like many things in life nothing lasts forever and in 2013 he retired from full time competitive athletics.

Straight away he struggled. The lack of a purpose, a clearly defined goal as something to aim for and get out bed simply wasnt there anymore. He began to feel frustrated, angry within himself and kept it all to himself. The days rolled into weeks, the weeks into months. As someone who was working full time albeit remotely, he struggled with the the lack of a set routine and also regularly communicating with his direct team face to face.

Moving to a new job brought an element of excitement, but soon he fell back into the same negative mindset. The lethargy, lack of motivating effected all areas and soon exercise was a thing of the past and comfort eating became a daily occurance.

David’s transition from elite sport is nothing new, but what he did next was. He suffered in silence and after years of saying and doing nothing, he spoke up and got the required help. Through dealing with his mental health crisis he has become a better person, a more resilient person.

Learning more about his journey, has made him understand the true value of having a goal and planning accordingly. Implementing the correct systems and procedures whilst creating the high performing team culture to enabling everyone to work optimally and effectively to achieve both personal and common goals.

As a result David established The Point 1 Project which exists to help inspire individuals, teams and organisation to transform their thinking and achieve both personal and team objectives.

Medals are won by the finest of margins, and in a sport where milliseconds count, the point one is of massive importance and value. If the game can be raised by 0.1 of a second across a number of critical areas, the goal may just become reality.

Point 1 Project areas include

  • Leadership – Winning mindset and the 5 C’s of courage, communication, collaboration, commitment and camaraderie
  • A Clear Goal – Focus, Purpose and Plan
  • Resilience – Awareness, Embracing and Managing
  • Healthy Lifestyle – Holistic, Practical and Sustainable
David Malone Membership Services & Marketing Director The Executive Institute

"David Gillick has spoken for The Executive Institute on two occasions in 2019. On his 1st occasion he received the highest feedback score of any speaker we have used in the last 12 months. We then invited him to speak at our annual leadership conference three months later and he scored higher again. To put this in perspective, The Executive engages over 100 speakers a year for the 50 leadership type events that we run. David’s story is heartfelt and honest, and his speaking style is engaging and very interactive. We look forward to working with David again. We highly recommend David to speak at corporate events at both executive and non-management level."

Frances Shanagher Account Controller McCurrach

“We recently had David join us for our annual McCurrach National Conference. We met David in advance and shared our theme and provided some background to what we do. On the day David shared his personal background including the ups and downs of his careers and how he got to where he is today. The key focus was around health and well being and the importance of taking time to mind ourselves and nourish our minds and body, even if it is for 44 seconds! We would highly recommend him to speak to your teams / businesses as the impact he made with our team was significant and relative to all people.”

Lisa Stapleton CEO CUMA

His message, key points and tips resonated with our audience and at dinner everyone was still talking about his presentation"
